Replacing the Old Cork Board

Sneak peek of today’s project. . .

Guess what I’m doing this weekend? I can hardly wait for Saturday because my sister-in-law and I are heading back up to Cline’s ~~Junk~~ Antiques! Eek! So very excited! What is Cline’s? In case you are a new reader to the blog, let me introduce you to Cline’s Antiques,or, as I like to call it, a little piece of junk heaven!

Look at all that rust and furniture waiting to be refinished!
Last time I visited Cline’s I scored some great windows for only two bucks each. Yes, $2! Here is one of them.

Yes, it’s dirty. Really dirty. You see, Cline’s has tons of windows waiting to go home with someone like me. The downside is that the windows, like almost everything else at Cline’s, are just piled up in the yard.
No biggie, a squirt of the hose and a little elbow grease cleaned it up nicely!
So, this window has been sitting in my garage since that shopping trip. I finally have put it to use! I got tired of looking at the cork board in the hall near my kitchen. It gets so cluttered with cards, artwork, invitations, etc. It had to go. I’ve also been wanting to create a chalkboard somewhere near the kitchen to jot down reminders. This window was the start to a perfect solution!

I masked off the glass with some plastic bags and painter’s tape. And spray-painted it a pretty gold/yellow color.

No paint project of mine is complete without a little distressing! I used my new favorite color Distress Ink, frayed burlap, around the edges and on the faces of the wood.

So my dirty old window was now clean and had a pretty coat of paint on it. Time to make this baby into something special.
I had this great Gallery Chalkboard Vinyl Decor from Stampin Up! It was $25 but I got it for free with an order I placed! So I attached the vinyl to the window.

Next I needed somewhere to hang things that I typically tack onto the bulletin board like photos, cards, invitations, artwork, etc.
I had this burlap ribbon and baker’s twine that I got from Pick Your Plum. They were perfect for this piece!

I used the burlap ribbon to add a big bow on the corner of the board.

I wrapped a piece of chalk in the baker’s twine so I could attack it to the board.

And also draped the baker’s twine across the top and bottom of the window. I used hot glue to attach it around the back. Then I added little clothespins that I also got from Stampin Up!

This was the perfect replacement for thumbtacks and cork board!

And with that, the board was complete!

And because I love to do things on a budget, I’m proud to brag that this piece cost less than $5! Remember, the window was $2, I bought one can of spray paint, the chalkboard vinyl piece was free and the ribbon, string and clothespins I already had in my stockpile.

Handmade Mother’s Day Card

Just two days left until Mother’s Day! Have you found a way to say thank you and I love you to yours?
If you haven’t already purchased a card, here is a simple way to make your own! The sentiment and papers can easily be changed, so this card could really be used for any occasion.

In the past year, I’ve become a Stampin’ Up-aholic! If you’re not familiar with Stampin’ Up!, it’s a company based out of Utah that sells a variety of paper products, stamps and other accessories for home decor, scrapbooking and card-makings. I love it so much {and I order so much of their product} I’ve recently become a SU demonstrator! So I’ve gotten lots of new products to try out!
One of my newest tools added to my collection are these

So I used started with 2 blank cards and 2 sets of each of the pieces I needed to make the card I had in my head. I decided on two different sized framelits.

I began by embossing my green cardstock.

Next I ran the paper with the framelits through the Big Shot.

The smaller one cut the green embossed paper.

And the larger cut the Beyond the Garden designer series paper.

I started with the pink strip of paper and layered the two framelit pieces on top.

I have this great set of stamps that includes a sentiment for just about any occasion/holiday. {Teeny Tiny Wishes}. I stamped it using Melon Mambo ink and then used the same ink to distress the edges.

A little floral punch and a rhinestone embellishment, an the care was complete!

I attached the greeting with a dimensional adhesive piece to give the card some texture.
And that was it! A cute, inexpensive way to show your mom that she matters!

Spring Wreath with Paper Flowers

A while back, during one of my weekly trips to Hobby Lobby, I found these fun paper flowers.

I just loved them! I didn’t really know what I would do with them, but I knew I had to have them! Eventually I decided I could use them for a wreath for the front porch. After all, they did match my yellow chair and other porch decor perfectly!
I decided to make this one pretty simple. I got one yard of brown burlap, the flowers and a straw wreath.

I cut the burlap into strips. I wasn’t too careful to make sure they were straight or even because it’s burlap, and it’s not supposed to look perfect!

I used hot glue to secure the first strip to the wreath and wrapped the strips around the wreath.

Each time I needed a new strip, I glued it to the back side of the wreath, close to where the previous piece ended.

I wrapped the wreath in two layers of burlap.

I cut the stems off of the flowers.

And used hot glue to attach them to the wreath.

I arranged them in a cluster to hide the leftover stem pieces.

I didn’t like the bright green color of the leaves, so I spray painted them with a pretty avocado paint.

Then glued the leaves to each end of the cluster.

And here is my new spring wreath! Complete with a yellow striped ribbon to match my fun yellow chair!

Strawberries & Cream Pie Recipe

The boys and I went to pick strawberries again the other day but the fields were closed. Apparently they’ve had so many people come to pick that they’ve had to close the fields during the week to allow the plants to replenish the fruit. So this year picking is only on the weekends. Guess my hometown’s best kept secret has gotten out!
Even though we didn’t get to pick berries, we didn’t leave empty-handed. We took home a gallon of juicy ripe strawberries!

Last time we picked I shared a couple of my favorite strawberry recipes with you. I also shared a new recipe I found on Pinterest that I was going to try. Well, I tried it and I liked it! No, I take that back. I didn’t just like it, I LOVED it! I loved it so much that I made it again! So much that I’m going to share it with you! Ladies and gentlemen. . .

Strawberries and Cream Pie

{Adapted from the recipe found at Just Putzing Around the Kitchen.}

First you need a graham cracker crust. You can make your own or, if you’re in a rush, just use a store-bought crust. This recipe makes a lot of filling so if you use store bought, you will probably have to leave some out.

If you’er making your own, you can crush your graham crackers in a food processor. The original recipe calls for 9 full crackers, but that didn’t yield enough for my crust to come all the way up the sides of the pie dish last time. So I used about 12 this time.

Add a stick of butter to the crushed grahams and mix with a fork. {Note: I added more crackers than the original recipe, therefore I added more butter as well.}

Press the crumbs firmly over the bottom and around edges of a pie dish.

Bake the pie crust in a 350 oven for 10 minutes to set. Allow to cool before adding filling.
In the meantime, you can start on the filling. Ingredients: 2 – 8 oz. blocks of softened cream cheese, 2 cups + 2 TBSP heaving whipping cream, 2/3 cups sugar, 2 tsp vanilla, 1 cup chocolate chips and about 2 cups cut strawberries.

In a medium bowl, whip 2 cups whipping cream on high until firm peaks form. Set aside.
In a separate bowl, beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until creamy and there are no lumps.

Gently fold about a third of the whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Continue with the remaining whipped cream just until blended and smooth.

Spoon into the pie crust.

And gently spread evenly over the crust.

Add the cut strawberries to the top of the cream cheese mixture. The original recipe uses much less and arranges them prettily over the top of the cream cheese. I wanted lots of strawberries on mine!

In the microwave or using a double-boiler, melt 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips plus 1 TBSP of reserved whipping cream. I followed the recipe the first time I made this but decided to use more chocolate this time because it was soooo good on the strawberries!

Place melted chocolate in a small Ziplock bag, seal, and cut off the tip. Drizzle the chocolate over the pie.

Refrigerate for at least an hour to allow the center to set.

Oh my gosh, you are going to LOVE this! I’m getting hungry just looking at the picture.

{BTW, I didn’t get a photo of the sliced pie. I got too excited to eat it an forgot. So I’m borrowing this one from here.}

Strawberries and Cream Pie

12 full graham crackers, crushed

1 stick of butter

2 – 8 oz. blocks of softened cream cheese

2 cups + 2 TBSP heaving whipping cream

2/3 cups sugar

2 tsp vanilla

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

2 cups fresh cut strawberries

Prepare crust by combining graham crackers and butter. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes. Set aside to cool.
In the meantime, beat heavy whipping on high speed until firm peaks form. In a separate bowl, mix cream cheese, vanilla and sugar until smooth and creamy. Gently fold in 1/3 of whipped cream into the cream cheese mixture. Fold in remaining whipped cream just until blended and smooth.
Spread the cream cheese mixture evenly into the cooled pie crust. Add strawberries to the top.
In a double boiler, melt chocolate chips and reserved 2 TBSP whipping cream until smooth. Place melted chocolate in a small plastic bag and cut off the tip. Drizzle chocolate over the strawberries.
Refrigerate for at least one hour to set.

A Teeny Rant & Our Weekend at the Beach

Has it really been one week since my last post? What a slacker I am! I know I’ve been absent more than present on the blog lately and I’m doing my best to turn that around. I’ve been telling you abou the favors I’ve been making. The favors that have started consuming every second of my time. It’s crazy!, amazing and exhausting at the same time! But truly miss my blog! I miss painting. I miss sewing. I miss decorating. I even miss cooking! But what I miss most is writing, reading and communicating! I’ve said it many times before that my husband had to twist my arm to get me to start this blog. I didn’t even know much about what a blog was when I created Scissors & Spatulas. I just knew that I liked being creative and doing things on my own and that maybe someone would enjoy reading about those things. Well, I had no idea!

I know I haven’t been around much lately and I definitely haven’t been doing much besides designing, cutting and assembling favor boxes. We recently launched a newer shop, known as the Ready to Pop Shop.

No matter how hard I try to squeeze a project in, I just can’t get to it. I It’s not that I don’t have the ideas. Trust me, the ideas are still flowing! Every time I go to one of the craft stores I find something that gives me an idea for a project that I “just have to do.” But do I reason with inner creative being? Do I remind myself how busy I am and won’t be able to find the time to do such a project? Of course not! I buy all the supplies I need. So I have a craft room full of supplies to fulfill a mind full of creative ideas that just can’t be completed!

My blog is my outlet and so once again I’m venting. SNAP opened my eyes up and really reminded me how much I missed being in the “Blogosphere.” Not only writing on my own blog, but visiting others. Chatting with friends online and just keeping up with what everyone was doing. Sigh. . . okay, that’s all. Thanks for “listening.” I’m sure tutorials are much more fun to read.

On a more positive note, we went to the beach with some friends this past weekend. The boys had a blast and it was so nice to sit with my feet in the sand and not a care in the world! Here are a few pics.

Oh SNAP! Queen Bee Market

You’ve probably heard of the Queen Bee Market, but just in case, it’s a ~~little~~ handmade market created by two sisters, Jess and Mique.

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but I believe the two are from California. The QBM is a collection of vendors selling some pretty amazing handmade items. We were lucky enough to have the QBM and all it’s vendors at SNAP for some seriously fun shopping! Ok, let me stop talking and let you start looking.

This is really just a peek at the market. Let me give a closer look inside the isles.

This shop was new to me. Cut It Out sells hand-cut wooden frames in all different sizes and shapes. The wood is left unfinished so you can paint it any color you want! And their prices are GREAT!

Oh SNAP! A Sneak Peek of SNAP Conference

I don’t even know where to start to share with you my experience last week in Salt Lake City, UT. It was such a fantastic trip and I met so many amazing new people and also got to reconnect with many friends that I met last year in AZ.

SNAP: Creativity at your fingertips, was a “spin off” of the creative blogger conference I attended last year, Creative Estates. If you are wondering what a creative blogger conference is, it’s a social as well as learning event that brings creative beings (both bloggers and handmade shop owners) together to learn new techniques, trends and opportunities for success. Want to see what a blogging conference table looks like? It’s full of laptops, IPads and cameras!

Calling SNAP a spin off of last year really isn’t fair because it was SO much better! Tauni and the “Snapettes,” y’all did an amazing job making dreams (yours and ours) come true!

If I share everything in this one post, you might stop to take a nap halfway through because it would be so long and cumbersome! So that it doesn’t take you forever and a day (with a nap in between) to hear about my fantastic experience, I’m going to break it up into parts. I really do have so much to share!
I think I’ll start with friends. I made new friends. I officially met friends that I had been following online. And I got to see old friends that I had the privilege of meeting last year, like Jen from Tatertots and Jello (far left) and Becca from Blue Cricket Design (center right).

First let me introduce to you my travelling buddy, Natalie from Johnny in a Dress. I’m sure most of you are familiar with her. I officially met Natalie last summer when we were attempting to plan our Southern blogger get together. We instantly connected and remained bloggy buddies since. It was so fun to have someone to travel with this year for that long flight from SC to UT!

And meet my other roommates, Tara from Tara Made It and Allison from A Glimpse Inside. I met both of them last year. In fact, Tara and I roomed together!

And yes, we had two pregnant gals in our room! Aren’t they cute?!

Ok, so ready to see something really exciting? Look who I met this year. . .
Centsational Girl, Kate! Eeeeeek! I love her and her blog!!! And she was so sweet! One of the highlights for me, for sure!

I also got to meet Mandi from Vintage Revivals and instantly fell in love! So sweet and so stinkin’ cute! What I didn’t know about Mandy was that up until a couple of years ago, she didn’t decorate her house. Her mother-in-law did! So glad she discovered her hidden talent because her rooms are fabulous!

Oh my gosh, and what a pleasure to meet Desiree, The 36th Avenue (far right in both pics). She has to be the cutest, funniest little thing ever! I also met Jen from Craftomaniac, Kristy of The Diary of Dave’s Wife (darling) and Michelle, from A Little Tipsy.

I finally got to meet my online buddy Vivienne from The V-Spot! Viv and I both have a passion for red wine and have been looking forward to sharing a glass in person for some time! If only we lived closer!

Hi, my name is Taylor. I am a SAHM to two beautiful girls, Jayne (3) and Savannah (1) and wife to my wonderful hubby, Jared. In my former life I worked in both marketing and sales and still enjoy flexing those muscles helping out a few of my wonderful friends who run businesses out of their homes. But mostly, I’m on the go with my girls who keep me extremely busy!

In my {spare} time I enjoy reading (on my new Kindle Fire, eeek!), going to thrift stores & garage sales and crafting. I recently joined a stamp club and am obsessed with making paper cards. It’s a wonderful outlet and gets my creative juices flowing. Not to mention having this outlet allows me some much needed “me” time which makes me a better momma & wife.

Freezable Meal Swap with Brooke

Who can resist a freezer full of home cooked meals to grab on the days life just get too busy…by pass that drive-thru and head home for dinner that someone else cooked!

A freezer full of home cooked meals? There is an easy way to get it without cooking 10 different meals at one time and filling up your freezer…can you imagine the cost, time or mess that would make?!

Here is your answer: host a freezer meal swap with your family and friends.

Here are the simple steps to fill your freezer:

1) Send out the invitation explaining a “meal swap” to your family and friends to see who is interested in participating. Our group uses Evite (a free online invitation website) and we have found it to be a great place to communicate with each other on who is participating and what they are bringing each month.

We choose to limit the number of participants to 10 a month.
You will need to set a date and place for the swap. Our group meets the second Tuesday of each month at the same location and same time.

2) Each participant will RSVP and list the home cooked freezer meal that they will be preparing.

3) One week before the swap you will need to send out an email to all participants with the number of meals they will need to prepare (ie: if there are 8 participants each person will need to make 8 of the same meal, 7 to swap and one for their family). The meals need to have 4-6 servings and be prepared in a 8×8 or 9×9 disposable/freezable dish or a freezer zip-lock bag.

Here is the process of my April meal exchange:

I chose a meal that was simple and only a few ingredients (I strive to keep my meal exchange cost at $50-$60…some times it does go over depending on the number of participants and number of ingredients I need). I also try to shop the sales throughout the month to save on the ingredients…this month I got buy 1 get 2 free on my chicken!

Here are my meals (4-6 servings) prepared and ready to package.

It does take a few hours of a day to prepare these dishes, but boy are they worth it when dinner time creeps up on you and you have not thought once about it…or when you know your day is going to be busy and you want to feed your family a home cooked meal over a drive-thru.

I placed the prepared chicken in press n seal package and then placed in a freezer zip-lock bag that has the name of recipe, cooking instructions and participants name (having names on each meal helps out during the swap part to ensure everyone leaves with your dish). If you use an 8×8/9×9 dish make sure you use plastic wrap/press n seal then foil on top and write the name of recipe, cooking instructions and participants name on top w/a sharpie.

Placed in my freezer, ready for swap day.

We all meet for a quick “swap” with our coolers. We unload the meals we cooked and head home with a variety of new meals to stock our freezers with!

Some notes to remember when doing an exchange:

Each participant can print out their recipe to include with their meal OR you can have everyone email the recipe to you and you email it to everyone in a file or save in a google share file for all to look up.
If someone can not make it to the swap you can have them drop off their cooler of meals to take for them.
You can choose to do MAIN dish only but if the recipe calls for noodles/rice or bread, include a 4-6 serving amount with your dish.
Some ladies have opted to do 2 meals a month (if you don’t have 10 participants signed up) to help stock a new mom’s freezer once she has had her little one.
If your normal 10 participants opt not to participate for several months you may want to let them know that if they do not participate for 3 consecutive months you will need to try and fill their spot with a new participant.
You can also have an alternate list of participants who can’t participate each month but would like to know if a spot opens up one month to participate.

Time to start Swapping Meals and Stocking Your Freezer!

Hi, I’m Erin and I’m a Mom turned Photographer. Almost 5 years ago after the birth of my first child, my appreciation for capturing “life” really hit home. As I watched my son roll over for the first time, then sit up and crawl across the room almost overnight; and when those gummy grins turned into smiles with little white teeth peeking out, I realized the only way I could make time stand still was to document all of these “Mama Treasures” with my camera.

Once I learned that I simply could not afford to hire a professional photographer as much as my little heart desired each month {week…..day!}, we made the investment into my first digital SLR camera. Like many Moms today, we have “nice” cameras. And yes, having a “nice” camera, lens, equipment, etc. does help, however it is only the starting point to taking great pictures.

I took a photography workshop one afternoon, learned how to use my camera in manual mode {which I believe is the absolute KEY for taking great pictures} and through snapping thousands upon thousands of images, I began to see what went into making a beautiful image.

Now I can’t go into all of that here, but what I can do is give you somewhere to start! There are numerous, EASY tips I can share that will make a HUGE difference in photographing your little loves.

Today I will share just a few and if you’d like, I can do a follow up post with some more!

1} When photographing children, get down at their level. This completely changes the perspective….try this at home and see how taking a picture from each angle can dramatically change the look of your images. A special “thank you” to my fabulous husband for taking these images of me “in action”.

2} Do not be afraid of color. In general, color photographs really well. People like the contrast in color, so I always suggest having my clients “coordinate” outfits verses “matching”. Jen has fantastic style and I love what she came up with for her family session a few weeks ago.

3} Anyone have a child who runs from the camera? 2 year olds anyone? I do!!! Don’t be afraid to incorporate a fun prop. Food works great…..bright cupcakes and big lollipops are usually great motivators and also can be fun to use in pictures! You can also try incorporating your child’s favorite toy. Thomas the Train “blue” photographs great! Here is a picture of my favorite two year old, he never stands still for me so I had him “show” me his frog art project while I snapped away

4} Make sure your frame {aka your real estate} tells a story. So many times my students will show me photographs where the subject takes up the smallest part of the frame. It does not hurt to “fill the frame”. If it is part of your frame, be sure it assists in telling the “story” of the image.

5} Lighting is truly everything. Poor lighting can ruin even the best of shots. The key to finding good lighting is finding enough evenly diffused light. Easiest way to do this is to step outside on a cloudy day Or find a spot with good shade coverage.

So now you have a few new “photography tricks” to try out, here is your homework until next time:

~Grab a willing subject, preferably one that does not move or likes to pose for pictures

~Head outside either at dawn or dusk or find a spot that has good, consistent, shade coverage.

~Take pictures of your subject from 5 different perspectives {crouching down at their level, from up high, lying on the ground, from the side, etc.}

~Upload your images and note what you liked and didn’t like about each one. Try and repeat what you liked next time!

Erin Jackson is a sought out Family, Children and Newborn Lifestyle Photographer in the Charlotte, NC and Fort Mill, SC areas. She is founder of Madison Lane Photography, a boutique studio focusing on the custom photography experience. Her goal is to provide her clients with first class service and attention to detail. Erin’s style is clean and timeless, yet fun! She has a passion for helping other Mom’s take better pictures of their loved ones and regularly offers a “Mom’s Photography Class”. Erin is currently working on taking this class online to reach Moms all over the world. Married to her Southern Gentleman, and known as “Mommy” to 3 children ages 4 and under, Erin loves all things Southern, boutique clothing and sweet tea/lemonade combos from Chick Fil A.
