It’s Looking Like a House!

I know, I’ve been slacking again on posting. However, a lot has happened since I last posted when I showed you the beginnings of the framing of the house {read here}.

Very shortly after this picture from my last post, the framing was complete. It was crazy how fast it went and it was so fun to drive by every day and see the changes and progress.

Within a few days after the completion of framing, we had a roof!

And a couple days later, we had windows!

Here is the back view of the house.

It’s starting to look like a house, huh?
Well, all that exciting stuff is over (for now). For the past week and a half it’s been plumbing and HVAC. Not that it isn’t great progress, it’s just not as much fun to watch! But we have our plumbing and HVAC systems in (I’ll spare you the details and pics of that!) and electrical starts tomorrow. Once all that is done, the drywall will start going in and it will really start looking like a house inside!

Foundation and Framing

Has it really been almost a month since I last posted about our house? Sorry about that! It’s been a pretty busy month! You’re going to be shocked by what I have to show you.

When I left off they had just poured the footings (see previous post here). The foundation came next and we were thrilled that we finally got to see something coming up from the ground!

brick foundation

I absolutely LOVE our brick choice. It’s the first one my eyes were drawn to when we walked into the brick. It’s Statesville Tumbled Oversized Walnut Creek Brick.

brick foundation statesville oversized tumbled walnut creek

I love even more this beautiful brickwork!

This is the foundation for our front porch. Isn’t it gorgeous?!
While the foundation was being finished, we got this delivery.

wood

Who knew a shipment of wood would be so exciting?!
They quickly laid the floor.

brick foundation statesville oversized tumbled walnut creek brick

This was the first time we got to “walk” our house! Finally! After looking at it on paper for over six months, we were actually walking on it!

framing custom house

Then this…

It was one of the happiest days of my life! It might sound silly, but my dream house was coming to life.

framing custom house river district baxter

 And it went up fast!

At this point we were able to walk through the house and actually see the framing of the rooms downstairs. It was wonderful to finally get a real-life view of the house we had worked on creating for so many months.

The back…

The roof…

The porch…

And this is where we are today. They put some makeshift stairs in so we were finally able to go see the upstairs today as well. It’s unbelievable! It puts a smile on my face just thinking about it!

A Last Minute Decision

 So last week I shared with you the progress of the land preparations that were done for the new house. {If you missed it, you can read about it here.}

prepping land for building custom house

Although it was exciting to see things changing, even if it was just dirt being pushed around, we were ready for more! So we were very excited the day the surveyor came out to plot the house. That is, until we saw where the house was plotted!

plotting house baxter river district

You can’t tell very well from the photo, but the house took up pretty much the entire width of the lot. And, because it was so wide, the only way it would fit was to move it really far back (our lot is skinnier in front, wider towards back) leaving us no back yard.

plotting house baxter river distrcit

It also left us very little side yard on either side.

staking2

I was completely devastated. We all knew the house was wide, but no one had anticipated we would have to plot it so far back on the lot. We also didn’t expect it to take up the entire span of the lot.

There was only one logical thing to do to solve this problem and it was not something I was very happy about. In order to get our back yard, we would have to switch our side load garage to a front load. So right there, on the spot, I had to make a decision. I wasn’t happy about it, but it didn’t seem we had much of a choice, so we said go for it. So our plans have changed from this…

custom house abberley lane modification

to this…

custom house abberley lane modification

I REALLY didn’t like this idea at first. I didn’t want the garage to be the first thing people saw when they looked at our house. I didn’t want it to be a distraction from our huge, beautiful front porch. However, I realized that our garage does not sit in line with the front of the house, it’s a good bit back, so attention will not be drawn to it too much. It’s  grown on me and I”m ok with it now. It’s moved our house up a lot and given us much more of a back yard. It’s all good.

So then we were ready for the footings to be dug and poured. Ready and waiting. We waited because of sleet and ice (Remember, we are in SC and that doesn’t happen EVER!) and we waited longer because mother nature decided that after a summer and fall of drought, it was finally time for it to rain.
But we finally had a couple days of beautiful sunny weather and have our footings!

digging footings river district baxterfooting digfootings dig

It was cool to finally see the footings because it really gave us an idea of exactly where the house would sit on the land and also we could get a better idea of the size.

footings poured river district baxter footings poured river district baxter footings poured river district baxter

We were so thankful that this part was complete because we knew that now they could really get started on the building! Not only was it exciting to finally see the footings complete, but I found this on the lot too.

Progress

Yes, I realize it’s been a month since I posted “I’m back!” after a long, much-needed break. Sorry about that!

After finally breaking ground on our dream house at the beginning of January {read about it here}, we were so excited to watch the trees being cleared, the dirt being moved and anything else that reminded us that we were finally doing this!
land lot river district baxter

clearing lot baxter river district

By the way, this will be our view from our front porch…gorgeous!

So things were moving along but then we ran into a couple delays that have slowed the progress of the house.

We hit rock…
Not just rock, boulders. Lots of them. These were all removed from our lot and this is about one third of them.

rocks boulders on lot

After removing those rocks there were a couple in the ground they had to break.

cutting rock

These guys were being difficult! So difficult a special machine had to be brought in!

cutting rock

But Mr. Mike (Our builder. Yep, that’s him running that machine up there) got through them and the grading of the land could finally move forward.

grading land baxter river district build house

Next we had the big hill. I am not sure where all the dirt came from, but the boys loved it!

climbing dirt pile

They climbed it…

dirt hill

slid down it…

and thought they were on top of the world!
fun on the dirt hill

It was fun while it lasted, but then the hill was bulldozed away.

The boys weren’t too happy about that!

So the land was prepped and we were ready to for the surveyor to stake the perimeter of the house. That was until the surveyor came and staked the house. I’ll tell you all about that next time!

I’m Back with Great News!

I realize I’ve been gone for quite a while. Much longer than I anticipated! But a lot has been happening over the past couple months and things have been pretty busy around here.

First, we sold our sold our house in just four days and then we had only thirty days to pack up and move out. Needless to say, we spend those thirty days packing morning, noon and night! It was a whirlwind, but we were very thankful to have sold and closed so quickly because that meant we could get started on our new house!

land baxter river district

If you are a follower, you probably remember that back in May we were beyond excited to have purchased land to build a new home. Our dream home.

We thought we already had the perfect plan. It was one of Southern Living’s most popular “Idea House” plans, the Abberley Lane. I had torn that house out of Southern Living Magazine years before. I loved it! But I never in a million years thought I’d have the opportunity to build it!

southern living abberley lane floorplan

I absolutely love the look of this house. It reminds me of a lowcountry plantation home. Hubby and I met in Charleston, and we used to love to walk around downtown and look at the gorgeous homes and architecture of the historic city. This one caught my eye immediately when I saw it because it reminds me of one of those homes.

Although it was the perfect plan, there were a “few” things we wanted to change. I know I have shown you these before, but it’s been a while so I thought I’d briefly refresh.

We wanted to extend the porch so that it wrapped around both sides of the house. This meant moving the garage to the back.

abberley lane floor plan modification

We wanted the kitchen and family room to be more open to each other.

abberley lane floor plan modification

We wanted to eliminate the two story family room to allow for more square footage upstairs.

abberley lane floor plan modification

We also didn’t need the formal living space in the front of the house so we borrowed the front entry and stairway from another Southern Living plan, Wentworth Heights (shown below). It allowed that extra room to be hidden behind the stairs. Perfect for my messy craft room!

abberley lane floor plan modification

A “few” modifications became many changes and many drafts, but we finally had the perfect plan. Thank God for our architect who was so patient and accommodating! (KC Home Designs).

She is currently working on the most recent (and final set), but this is pretty close. We only made a few changes after picking out appliances and choosing bathroom cabinets.

Custom home abberley lane modification

After the plans were complete, it was time to choose a builder. We decided on Olde South Homes, a very impressive husband and wife team. We are thrilled that they will be building our dream home and have been very impressed with everything so far!

After weeks of waiting to close at the bank and a couple more weeks of waiting on permits, etc, we have finally broken ground!

breaking ground river districtbreaking ground river district

I’m sure these pictures aren’t too exciting for y’all, but for us it was HUGE! So we are finally, after months of patiently (and not so patiently) waiting, building our house! Stay tuned, I plan on posting about the house often!

A little time out…

Ok my friends, I tried. I really, really did. Over the past several months I’ve tried to share new, creative ideas with you. But for me, these lame posts just aren’t cutting it. I miss (and I’m pretty sure you do too) refinishing furniture, re-decorating rooms, coming up with new, creative home decor. But to be honest, there is not a whole lot I can do right now.

For those of you who follow my blog, you know that we are in the process of selling our current home in order to build our dream home.

southern living abberley lane floorplan

Our plans have been under construction for several months now. I’ve shown y’all on a couple different drawings of our version of the Abberley Lane shown above. Well, even though I said it was finished, I fibbed! Or maybe just changed my mind a few more times. We are in the final stages of detailing and we made a few minor changes since the last time I shared with you the elevation and floorplan. I’m excited to show you, and I will, as soon as I get it back from the architect! And, we have chosen our builder as well! I’ll announce that soon too!

The good news is that after less than a week on the market, our house is under contract! Not only that, but we have less than one month until closing! While this is all very exciting, it is also terrifying to know that I have to pack up my entire house (and I got a lot of stuff people) and find somewhere to live while our new house is being built! Yes, I’m freaking out a little bit!

(source)
So back to the point of this post. I’ve tried, I really have tried to make things as interesting as they used to be. But since I knew we were moving it seemed sill to re-decorate, I was afraid to paint furniture because I don’t know what my colors and decor will be in the new house, and frankly, I just didn’t have any creative motivation. But I did try my best to post some things. And I planned on continuing to do so, until today.

I stressed all day (while packing) about getting a post up. You see, I get anxiety if I don’t post frequently enough. It used to be that I had to post every day. But then when I started my business I learned to relax and that it was ok to skip a day or two here and there. But lately, I’ve been skipping more days than posting and it’s causing me major anxiety. (I found this little comic here and thought it was funny.)

Then today I had this moment where I realized that I needed to take a break. Not a permanent break. Oh no, I’m going to be sharing with y’all the building of the new house! And then I get to share decorating it!!!! But I am going to take a temporary break for the next few weeks while I pack the house up.

So I hope that you don’t mind. I might still post here and there. But I want to do it because I have something to post or because I have a few spare minutes to do so. I don’t want to feel pressured or anxious about it. But please don’t leave me! I promise that when I come back, I’m going to have way more to talk about and to share than I’ve shared in the last year! I promise! I’ll be back soon…

Decorated Halloween Branches

I kept my Halloween decorations to a minimum this year since our house is currently on the market. Did I tell y’all that, by the way? Yes, the house went on the market! Anyway, as much as I love decorating for Halloween (and fall in general), I kept it minimal for staging purposes. I hate my house being staged. It doesn’t feel like my house.

halloween branches with paper ornaments

But I did create this little vignette on my kitchen sideboard.
The weather here in SC has been gorgeous! I sent the boys into the woods in our back yard and asked them to find me some big branches. Of course this was not a difficult task for them! They love collecting sticks!

I spray painted the branches with some black spray paint I had in the garage.

During the process of turning and drying each side, I made the “ornaments.” I already had made some of these rosettes for a holiday craft party I had for the neighbors. I used Stampin Up designer series paper, punches and the Designer Rosette Bigz Cutting Die to create the accordion folded rosettes. (order rosette die here) I basically layered the different pieces using the coordinating papers from Stampin Up. (They make it so easy!)

I used Howlstooth and Scaringbone designer series paper for these two. I LOVE this paper! It is darling for Fall and halloween, but can also be used any time of the year! You can order it here.

These next two are made from Stampin Up’s Wicked Fun designer series paper, which, by the way, is on clearance for an excellent deal! Order it here.stampin up wicked fun halloween rosette

This ornament also uses the Lifestyle Crafts Lattice Doily cutting die.

I also used this skeleton cutting die from Lifestyle Crafts Tricks ‘n Treats collection.

lifestyle crafts skeleton die cut

Once I started assembling it, I realized that it would be a great activity for the boys!

lifestyle crafts skeleton die cut

So I cut two more sets and told them to see if they could build a skeleton.

I let them do it on their own first and I was pretty surprised at how well they did! But then I let them use mine as a model to glue their pieces to the paper.

My skeleton got some ribbon and some distressing and was hung on my tree with the rosettes.

And here are all the “ornaments” all together on the branches.

Pickin’ Apples

We recently took our annual fall road trip to Sky Top Apple Orchard in the mountains of North Carolina.

This was our third year at the orchard but this was the first time we were actually able to pick apples. The past two years we have gone too late in the season and the trees were picked over.

We made it a family trip and took my mother-in-law and met my sister-in-law and nieces who live closer to the orchard.
I just wanted to share a few pictures with you.

We had a blast!

This week…

Hey y’all! i just wanted to let you know that this week, I’m taking a break!

And it’s ok!
But why? Because this week…

I’m busy trying to decide on a builder for our new house. Eeek!

The orders for my seat sacks are rolling in! WOW!
And I just need some time for my family.

Don’t worry, it’s only a week. I will be back Monday and things will be back to normal!

Shelf Reliance & THRIVE Foods with Carolina Food Storage

Today I’m excited to tell you about one of Scissors and Spatulas’ newest sponsors! Carolina Food Storage is a website and online store dedicated to improving and maintaining the quality of food while eliminating waste caused by tossing expired foods.
I don’t know about you, but when I clean out my pantry I end up throwing out a garbage can full of unused, unopened food because it has expired. Money down the drain! Using the Shelf Reliance food rotation system in combination with freeze dried foods, this waste can be eliminated. Now I know you are thinking, “Freeze dried foods? No thank you!” But really, you gotta take a look at these.
THRIVE foods offers the same food that you use every day and would typically buy from the grocery store with the advantage of a longer shelf life. Thrive products are all natural and free of harmful preservatives and additives. And the best part…all the work has been done for you! No dicing, chopping peeling, etc! If you still don’t believe me, take a look at some of the recipes they have available here.

When combined with the Food Rotation Systems, THRIVE foods are constantly rotated on a first in first out basis.  This guarantees your family receives the freshest food possible and helps reduce waste.

Now let me introduce you to the founder of Carolina Food Storage.
Meet Leigh Ann…
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
For years my husband has wanted to start a food storage system.  We really didnt know where to start and what to buy.  We stocked up on various canned foods that we never seemed to want to eat on a daily basis and they eventually expired and were thrown out.  I set out on a search to find a system that would work for us and was so excited when I found Shelf Reliance!  The selection and quality of the food is better than anything I had tried in the past.  With a shelf life of 25 years on most items, I knew that we wouldn’t waste our hard earned money on food that is thrown away.  Shelf Reliance has all of the foods that you normally shop for at the grocery store, fruits, veggies, grains, meats and dairy all with an extended shelf life.  Shelf Reliance also helps me save time, I don’t have to run to the grocery store as often and I don’t have to spend extra time in the kitchen chopping and browning because it has all been done for me!
Shelf Reliance THRIVE Freeze Dried Foods are great for:
* Quick Everyday Meals
* Emergency Food Supplies
* Camping Trips
* Dorm Rooms
* Vacation Homes

Since our foods do not require refrigeration and have an extended shelf life the possibilities are endless!
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Head on over to Carolina Food Storage now and take a look. It’s a pretty cool concept to help save money and eliminate waste while eating well at the same time! Also stop by their Facebook page where you can find lots of new recipes, deals, and other information.

Fun Fall Peanut Butter Cereal Treats

peanut butter cereal fall halloween treats

I found the recipe for these bars last year in a magazine. I can’t remember which one. I thought they were really cute for a fall treat and the recipe sounded yummy. Plus they are simple enough that the kiddos can help. They are basically Rice Krispy treats using a different cereal and adding peanut butter and M&Ms. I found these red, brown and yellow ones for fall. If you can’t find them, you can always use regular and take out the blue and green.

You’ll need: 30 large marshmallows, 3 Tbsp butter, 1 Tbsp peanut butter, 6 cups Cap’n Crunch peanut butter cereal, and 1 cup M&Ms.

Add marshmallows, butter and peanut butter to a large saucepan.

Cook on medium heat, stirring often, until melted and combined.

Add the cereal…

and M&Ms…

and stir, just until combined. Don’t over stir because the M&Ms will start melting and breaking.

Transfer mixture to a greased 9×13-inch pan. Press firmly to cover bottom of pan.

Allow to cool and then serve!
I decided to cut them into bite-size squares and serve them on a lollipop stick!

A Few Fall Recipes {Revisited}

Fall is officially here! That means pumpkins, apples and spice! I love fall flavors!
Today I’m revisiting a few of my favorite recipes that I’ve shared with you in the past. Enjoy!
pumpkin pie dip scissors and spatulas
This dip is soooo good! And you can make a fun fall presentation by serving it out of a pumpkin! I wish I could call it my own, but I got it from Southern Living.
It’s very easy.

These little guys may be tiny but they are pure deliciousness! Not to mention, adorable!
And they are simple enough that the kiddos can help!
You can get the recipe here.

It’s apple season! We always head up to the mountains to do some apple picking. This recipe uses both fresh apples and apple cider.
You can get the recipe here.
pumpkin chili scissors & spatulas

I have to say I was a bit skeptical of this recipe at first. But I’ll try anything once, so I went for it. So glad I did! The pumpkin gave the chili a rich, nutty flavor.

The ingredients are pretty basic. You can find the measurements here. The recipe calls for 2 jalapenos but I didn’t even use a whole one. I used white kidney beans (cannellni beans) because I thought they would go better with turkey than dark kidney beans. I also used fire roasted diced tomatoes because I really like the flavor.

Happy fall y’all!

Parker’s Lego Birthday

Last Saturday we celebrated Parker Reese’s third birthday. It’s hard to believe my sweet little monkey is three already!

The child’s two favorite things are Legos and Star Wars so Of course he chose a Lego themed party. I was actually pretty excited about this. I knew it would be a fun (and easy) theme to work with.

I started with Lego invitations that I found on Pinterest. I created the invitation using the Silhouette software. I downloaded a Lego font that I found on the Internet and just changed the color of the letters and I used a wooden stamp for the party information. I cut red, yellow and blue card stock into rectangles (about 3×5 inches) and used a 1-inch punch for the circles. Dimensionals were used under the circles to give it the 3-D look.

Lego birthday invitations cards

The decorations were simple. I bought lots of red, yellow and blue balloons and tied them around the room. I made this banner using my silhouette, some lego scrapbook paper I found at the craft store and an image I found online.

lego birthday banner

The table spread was also simple. I used a big Lego head in the center of the table and tied lots of balloons to it (they hadn’t arrived yet when I took the photo). I added some color using vases of candy (blue Sixlets, Twizzlers and Lemonheads) and, of course, Legos!

lego birthday party decor

I really wish I had gotten a better picture of the cake. It was three sections (red, yellow and blue) stacked. My friend Cristy (who made Parker’s adorable hay bale cake last year)

lego cake birthday

I was lucky enough to find someone local that did Lego parties. Bricks 4 Kidz was great! During the party, the kids got to build they’re own mini figuring, participate in races, games, scavenger hunts and more!

For party favors I ordered a bunch of lego candy (2 lbs!) and random Lego pieces (500!).
Each child got to take home a candy favor. I used cellophane bags and the Lego paper to make the candy favors.

I had hubby and the boys custom build each child a figure using the Lego pieces. They turned out pretty interesting! The kids also got to take home their mini figurine they created during the party.

Halloween Matchbox Treats

lifestyle crafts matchbox die cut stampin up halloween

Yes, Halloween is right around the corner! Can you believe it? It is time to start thinking about those Halloween treats!
The Lifestyle Crafts Fall Core Collection 2 cutting dies have just been released!

And I’ve used two of these items to make the cute little Halloween treat boxes above!

The Rectangular Matchbox Cutting Die was used to create the treat container. I chose some coordinating Halloween papers from Stampin’ Up! and ran them through the Big Shot with the matchbox die cut.

Here is box number 1…

lifestyle crafts rectangle match box cutting die

This designer series paper I used for this box, Wicke Fun, is one of my favorite holiday papers! And it’s on clearance right now and are 50% off the regular price!! Get it here before they are gone! I also used the bat punch, also on clearance (order here) and the new rosettes die cut (order here).

Once the box is cut you fold it and put it together  so it looks like this. The rosette die cuts and scores the paper. To create the rosette, you will fold (accordion style) the scored marks, glue the two end pieces and push the center inwards and fill the center with hot glue to secure. The circles and bat are punched and the white circle is stamped with using the Wicked Fun stamp set (order here).

I added a stip of matching card stock around the box. Before I attached it, I stapled coordinating ribbons. Don’t worry, the staple will be covered by the rosette!

Then I secured the rosette piece on the strip with hot glue.

Now for box number 2…

In addition to the matchbox die, I used the Lattice Doily Die, also from the new collection, for the second box.
I ran it through the Big Shot, using grey card stock.

The doily was then folded to fit around the box.
This designer series paper from Stampin Up! is Howlstooth & Scaringbone, the new Halloween collection. This collection is fun! It features orange and ivory polka dots, herringbone, stripes, orange chevron (TRENDY), grey & ivory polka dots, and a few other very “in” prints (order here).

Like the first box, I stapled coordinating ribbon to the doily piece before attaching it to the box (order here). The rosette was created like above. Now check out the cute googlie eyes on the mummy! I actually purchased this stamp from Michaels (in the dollar stamp bins) but you can find a similar stamp set here. And the adorable googly eyes have adhesive backing (order here).

Building a House: Plans are DONE!

Have you started to think that maybe all that “we are building a house” stuff was a fabrication? I know, it’s been a while since I’ve posted an update on the status of our new house. If you remember, my dream house, a plan I had torn out of Southern Living years ago, was this one, the Abberley Lane.southern living abberley lane floorplan

Our front elevation was being based off of this one and we thought the inside floor plan worked, for the most part. Back at the beginning of August in this post, I shared with you some of the changes we were making to the original. Well, what I thought was a few changes ended up being a lot of changes! That is what has taken so long!

BUT, I’m happy to announce that {for the most part} we are finished! We still have a few doors and windows to add/move around and a few details to work on, but we have a floor plan and we have an elevation! So here is the original…

And here is ours…

I’m in love! It’s perfect! If you remember from the August update the main change we wanted to make to the elevation of the house was to move the garage around to the back {rather than sticking out front} so that we could extend the porch all the way around the front of the house. We now have a HUGE front porch!

Ok, now for the inside! I can’t really compare it to the original because we pretty much changed everything! With the exception of the dining room, hearth room and back stairs, nothing else is the same!

We took photos from magazines, floor plans from different houses, our own ideas, etc. and our fabulous architect, Kattie of KC Home Designs, did it!

Right now we are in the process of choosing our builder. I’ll give you an update soon!

DIY Board and Batten “Mudroom”

board and batten hallway drop zone mudroom

This is our back hallway. It’s just off the kitchen and is the entry from the garage. It is also where I keep the boys jackets, backpacks, my purse and everything else that needs to be dumped when we come into the house.
I’ve wanted to make a “mudroom” in this space for over a year. Obviously there isn’t room for a bench (I’ve tried to convince myself that a small one might work but I know it would be completely in the way.) but I’ve wanted to add board and batten with hooks. Why I haven’t gotten around to it sooner, I don’t know. Probably because the little hook thing I had worked just fine. Until a couple weeks ago when one of them broke because it had too much hanging on it!

That was all the motivation I needed. Last Saturday I told my husband he was going to be putting up board and batten. He had no clue what I was talking about so I pulled up Pinterest and showed him some examples. I wish had done this months and months ago because it was SO easy and cost almost nothing! It was finished by the end of the weekend.

Of course we had the wood we needed in the garage. One wide board to use across the top (this is the board or board and batten) and the skinnier boards to sit perpendicular to it (known as batten). We did have to buy one extra skinny board to use as the baseboard.
Hubby measured the wall and cut the boards to fit.

He put two good coats of white trim paint on all of the boards.

While the paint dried, he tore out the existing baseboard and patched up the wall with spackle. (The angles of the old baseboard would not fit right with the batten boards so we had to replace the baseboards with a straight edge board.)

tear out baseboard

Once the boards were dried he brought them in and measured and marked the distance between the batten pieces.

board and batten measure

The batten pieces were secured to the wall with nails and the board was attached with screws to ensure it would hold the weight of whatever would hang on the hooks.

board and batten drill to wall

The screw and nail holes were covered with some wood putty.

board and batten patch holes wood putty

Then sanded smooth.

sand wood putty

It took two coats of paint to cover the walls and one more coat on the wood to cover the putty.

board and batten paint

I purchased the hooks from Hobby Lobby. They were $3.99 each but I got them when they were 50% off so all together I only spent $6.

board and batten hallway hooks

And my board and batten wall was finished! Seriously, it was that easy!

board and batten hallway drop zone mudroom

And it cost us about $15! If you didn’t have the wood and paint like we did, I’d say you would spend about $50. Not too bad!

Spooky Halloween Coffin

Lifestyle Crafts will be releasing their newest line of fall holiday die cuts on September 17. I have a little sneak peak for you of one of the dies from the Tricks ‘n Treats collection.

lifestyle crafts halloween coffin die cut

This spooky coffin was created from the QuicKutz coffin cutting die {not for sale until Sept 17}. Let me show you how I made it.
I started by measuring some designer series paper from Stampin’ Up! {view entire collection here}. What I love about SU’s designer paper is that it is heavy duty, like card stock, so you can use it for boxes, cards, etc. and it will hold up. It’s not flimsy like the paper you get at the craft store. This grey and ivory polkadot paper is from their newest Halloween collection, Howlstooth and Scaringbone {order here}.

lifestyle craft coffin die cut howlstooth paper

After cutting the paper to size, I placed the paper and die in the cutting plates and ran it through the Big Shot {order here}. The die cuts some edges and perforates others.

lifestyle craft coffin die cut howlstooth paper

The perforated edges are to be folded. The small tabs are where you will glue the sides together.

lifestyle craft coffin die cut howlstooth paper

Two way glue works best for three-dimensional objects. It makes them sturdier. It comes in a green and white bottle and you can find it in the scrapbook adhesive section of the craft store or you can order here.

lifestyle craft coffin die cut howlstooth paper

Once the top and bottom were glued, they looked like this.

lifestyle craft coffin die cut howlstooth paper

Then I decided I wanted to emboss the top, so I had to peel it apart. I had this cute spiderweb embossing folder (order here) so I used it for the coffin lid.

spider web embossing folder

And then I decided I needed to distress it with some ink (are you surprised?)

spider web embossing folder coffin die cut

Now that the coffin was finished, I needed to dress it up. I used these two small tags, part of Lifestyle Crafts Label It Kits cutting dies.

lifestyle crafts label it kit die cut

Once cut, I used Stampin Up Wicked Cool stamp set {order here}. I stamped “Spooky” and then used the spider web to stamp in just the corners of the label. Then, of course, I distressed both tags with black ink.

wicked fun stampin up

I used double-sided adhesive to stick the tags together and then added a little rhinestone embellishment {order here}.

I tied two coordinating ribbons in a single knot and attached the tag to the coffin using a dimensional adhesive {order here}. If you’re not familiar with dimensionals, they are fat, double-sided adhesive pieces that leave a gap between the two pieces you are attaching. They add “dimension” to your project!

And that was it!

I added some crinkled orange paper which I cut myself using a scoring board and scissors.

The skeleton came from a Dollar Tree garland.

Wednesday’s Whip Up: Vintage Spools

Back in July, we took a trip to Folly Beach, near one of my favorite places – Charleston, SC. Hubby and I used to live there and I never get tired of the history, architecture, food and shopping!
While there my sister-in-law, Ilke, and I vowed to do some antique shopping. We took one afternoon and hit as many as we could in the ares outside of downtown. {Downtown’s antiques are WAY over our budget!} Here are some of my finds…

I found several vintage handkerchiefs, ribbons and lace. I had no idea what I would do with them, but I had to have them!

And I am a sucker for vintage spools.

Originally I was going to leave the spools the way the were and use them as candles sticks. But I had an idea the other day while I was trying to figure out where to put them.
I decided to wrap them in burlap and then use the vintage ribbon and lace on top of the burlap.

I used hot glue to secure the burlap on the backside. I did the same with the lace. The ribbon I just tied in a knot, tightly enough that it would not slip down.

I frayed the top and bottom of the burlap by pulling some of the horizontal threads out.

And that was it! Just something I whipped up on Wednesday!
