Update Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets Day 11

As many of you know, we are currently working on painting our kitchen cabinets. It’s been way longer than I expected since my last update. But, things have been moving much slower than anticipated. This is partly because we had a set back with the primer and partly because I took a  day {maybe two} off.  I will not lie to you, this project is not easy! I was tired, stressed and I even got a little bored with it and I needed a break!

I have a love/hate relationship with this project. I knew it was not going to be easy, nor would it be quick, but I guess I just didn’t know how much work it would actually be. So, I hate that my kitchen has been turned upside down for almost two weeks. I hate oil based primer. I hate this project! But, here is what I love. . .

the color!
It looks so good and the doors aren’t even on yet!
In case you missed this post I’ll give you a summary of what we have done so far.
Removed doors, drawers and hardware.
Washed thoroughly with T.S.P.
Filled hardware holes and roughed up the finish with sand paper.
Primed all surfaces with oil-based primer.
Hubby was sanding the boxes {part attached to wall} of cabinets while I wrote my last post {March 12}. I thought I’d have the first coat of paint on by lunchtime the next day. WRONG! The oil based primer was so thick that, even after sanding, there were brush strokes and roller marks. So instead of painting, I spent the morning sanding the primer, again. Major set back! So after sanding it smooth, there was no longer a thick layer of primer. This is when I started hating the project and worrying how it would turn out.

But on a good note, I did get a coat of paint on the cabinets that evening. We chose Valspar Signature Series Swiss Coffee in a semi-gloss finish. The color is slightly off-white. Hopefully since the paint had primer built in, it will make up for the primer we sanded off! We now have 2 coats on the boxes and drawers my friends!! And the best part? I was able to put my dishes back on the shelves and have a functioning kitchen again!

So you notice the top left cabinets are still shelfless and that I painted the insides. I’m adding glass doors to these two. Not sure how we are going to do it yet, but we will figure it out.
And maybe you noticed that the cabinet above the microwave isn’t really painted. We are also making some changes to it.

There’s hubby doing a little demolition.
The molding is off!
Okay, I’ll give you a sneak peak {courtesy of Google Sketchup} of what we are doing.
Ta-da!
And who is building this? My talented hubby of course! Except his will look better!
So there you have it. We have the boxes and drawers finished while the doors sit in the garage, fully primed {not sanded}. But hey, I have my kitchen back and I can see that this project is going give us positive results.
Stay tuned. . .

  1. It is looking so great. This is probably something we'll be doing in the not so distant future. I'll be really interested in the process.

  2. Looks great! Don't worry about the brush strokes anymore! It will turn out fine!
Hope everything get back in order, I know it is annoying when kitchen contents are all over the place!

  3. It looks GREAT already!! Love the color and love what your doing over the microwave. I know it's a lot of work but it's going to look beautiful in the end! Can't wait to see it finished!! Martina

  4. The cabinets look amazing already…I can tell it's going to be absolutely beautiful when it's all done! I know it is a tremendous amount of work- I painted my own cabinets a couple of years ago. I'm looking forward to seeing it all completed- especially the glass doors.

  5. Sorry that this project is a tough one but I have to say I am loving it already. I think you will be so thrilled with the end result.

  6. I used the small sponge roller. That is what was recommended to me at Sherwin Williams. Not the nap rollers. And take it from me (experience) buy HIGH quality brushes, like Purdy. We bought the mid-grade brushes first and found out very quickly that it was not a good idea so we went back and bought the high quality brushes which worked much better.
