Renewing an Awkward Space in an Awkward Place

My Little Nook Makeover
Do you have one of these? Since moving into this house 4 years ago I’ve struggled with decorating this little wall nook. I’ve changed it several times. From flowers to candles to photo frames, this space has been changed so many times but each time there has been one thing in common. I never really loved it.  It’s just an awkward space in an awkward place. But, I’m happy to announce that I re-decorated (AGAIN)  and this time I like it! I really, really like it!

First I cleared the area for a fresh start. This makes it easier to see the space and envision what I want to do.

Then I chose frames to fit and fill the space. I love these black square frames. Very inexpensive at Garden Ridge.

These are nice frames, but kind of plain so I added some ribbon to jazz them up a bit.
Click here for the tutorial on making these frames.

Next, I used my Cricut to cut vinyl letters to stick above the frames.  For a tutorial on how to cut and stick the vinyl, click here.

I started with “family” but after placing the word I felt like there was too much wall space leftover. So I cut more letters  using  a different font to create “Our family est. 2004.”

So the wall was finished, now I needed to work on the shelf.

I started with my monogrammed apothecary jar (which I made in my fabulous MOPS group) and a framed 5×7 photo of hubby and I with Little Man #2 in the belly.
Liked it, but didn’t love it.  So. . . .

I added our wedding photo (circa 2004) and changed the preggy photo frame to match the other (a little wider than the first so it fills in a little more space).  Finished!
I have to say that, for the first time in four years, I really love this awkward little space!

  1. I think the space looks GREAT! That cricut…amazing! I think it should be on my wish list!!! I am replying to your question at Three Pixie Lane! I am so sorry it took me this long to respond! I found the old wood from Rebecca O'Brien who owns the Sustainable Warehouse. She takes old bead board and window frames, old doors and screens and seeks to reuse and repurpose them. I got a ton of wood for almost nothing! She says she is on facebook and regularly updates when she has new finds. Her phone number is 843-532-9351. I love some of the little antique stores all over Mt. Pleasant. Palmetto Moon Antiques is on chuck dawley blvd. I also like the antique mall that is in the corner of the building across from where the Mt. P Farmer's Market is (at the Middle school)…just up from GDC. I believe Wing King is in the same mall. I apologize for sketchy info! I can't remember streets and exact names…just where they are! There is a little store in the same area called 'La De Dah's" that has some cute things…I hope this helps! I found most of the 'junkin' finds' at these places! Good luck and nice to meet you! Christie at Three Pixie Lane

  2. I went to click to follow and realized you are in Fort Mill! I am in Rock Hill!!! I was thinking you were in Charleston! It is a small world! I will look forward to following! Christie at Three Pixie Lane

  4. I think it looks awesome! We are looking at buying a new house, and so many of the newer ones have those little alcoves. I was never really sure what I would do if we bought a house that had one. This is simple and beautiful. :-)

  5. When you first asked "do you have one of these?" I thought, well, they look cool, but I bet it would be kind of awkward to figure out.
But yours looks so good that now I want one!
